Back In The Saddle Again!

by Toni

I am a horse lover, and have been away from them too long. My growing up stage involved horses.
After 25 years, I am eager to get back to them.

I am interested in lessons and starting from scratch.

What and how would you recommend I do this?

Thanks in advance,

Hello Toni,

Thanks for your question!

How great that you are coming back to horses! You are not alone--lots of people who rode as kids come back to the sport as adults.

Few things to consider are what are your goals or expectations and what kind of shape are you in.

For many adults they want to ride and want the challenge of learning but do not want to jump(for various reasons including fear of getting hurt and missing work or even not into the competitive angle that is very often attached to learning to jump). So if that is where you are at you could consider Dressage or Western riding instruction.

If you are not interested in the instruction part there are still some stables around the cities that offer public trail rides-just keep in mind that you might get a bit bored of following nose to tail on the trail!

Since you rode as a kid you know that each barn has its own distinctive "personality". Before you commit to any lesson packages I would suggest that you go and visit a bunch of places first.

Narrow your search down by looking online and after your first contact by phone or email you should have a good idea of the places you want to visit.

From there I would make arrangements to go and see a lesson being taught and take an introductory lesson for yourself.

You might end up trying a few places before you find your "fit" but it will be worth it!
