Behaviour and Training the Western Horse by R W Miller

by Roberta

What a great lesson just filled with teaching moments for me. I am reading a book that Lisa has let me borrow on Behaviour and Training the Western Horse by R W Miller.

Funny, I was reading the section on lightness in riding. After you drew us aside to talk about how little pressure you need to put on the reins, you sent us out on the rail at a jog. I really noticed how little I had to pick up on the reins to be about to get a response out of Jack. It was amazing.

I really like the theory parts of the lesson, it reinforces the practical instruction that you give to us. It seems to clarify things for me. As a teacher of Physical Education I especially tended to stress the theory as well as the practical. It made the kids who just wanted to get out there and do it go nuts but then it helped the kids who needed to see the reasons behind things understand what I was saying.

For me, the theory is just as important as the practical part of the lesson.

Thanks again,
