Black Horses

by Abby loves horses

Somebody said to me that black horses in the summer (I live in a hot country) get more tired and hot than white or brown horses, is it true?
I hope you know the answer.

What a great question!

I don't know what the "science" says about this but I know from my 35+ years in the horse industry that every black horse that has ever been in my care feels the sun and the summer heat more than the palominos and the chestnuts horses.

To me this makes sense since we all know that darker colours absorb heat and lighter colours reflect the sun. Here at Harmony Ranch we have a few black and near black horses and every summer we keep an eye on them and they let us know when they want to come into the cool of the barn and out of the sun.

Keep this in mind in your hot climate in Spain--watch for signs of over heating and sun and heat stroke.

And just as a point of interest and to put a bit of science behind my experience--did you know that polar bears have black skin? because black is a very heat absorbent colour Their white hair on top is pretty translucent which allows the sun to penetrate to the skin and the hair keeps out the cold and the snow! So it makes sense that a black horse which has black skin would get pretty toasty!
