First Timer Boarding Question

(Kingston, Ontario)

I am a first time owner at 66 yrs old. My new Canadian mare is in her mid to late 20s.
Is it safe to board her in a facility that is also in the business of buying and selling horses? Owners are very good and are experienced.
Sure wish I lived near you. Too far to drive from Kingston!

Thanks for your question.

In answer to your question; my only concern would be that if they are having a lot of horses coming in and going out that they not mix them with the longterm residents such as your horse. Just because even with vaccinations your horse is still vulnerable to many diseases and issues from unknown horses. Also the hierarchy of the herd would be constantly changing which could lead to a lot of unneeded stress and potential for injury.

I am sure if they are experienced and knowledgeable horsemen they will be aware of all the details of such a business and integrating different horses and balancing that with the needs of their clients.

Other than that use your common sense and if something doesn't make sense--ask.

Good luck and enjoy your mare!
