When my clients are ready to purchase their own saddle, I almost always recommend that they look into used Western saddles for sale. This way someone else has paid the price for brand new and they have broken it in for you too! In almost every case you can find really great used Western saddles for sale for the same price as mediocre western saddles.
However, that being said, that won't always work if you or your horse have special requirements that mean a brand new or custom made western saddle is the only thing that will fit. And for some, they just like the idea of buying new-nothing wrong with that!
Whether shopping for used saddles for sale or new Western saddles, purchasing your saddle is no small investment! Be prepared to spend $1000 and up for s decent used Western saddle and about $2500 and up (sky's the limit in saddle prices!)for a decent new Western saddle. Yes I know there are bargains out there and sometimes you're in the right place at the right time but in most cases you get what you pay for! And that means your butt pays the price in discomfort. And also don't forget that a cheaply made saddle will do nothing to enhance your riding position or the comfort of your horse. And a horse that ain't comfy ain't gonna ride comfy either!
And it's worth mentioning here that in the re-sell market, good quality saddles hold their value a lot better than the cheapies! So just in case one day you are on the selling side of your used Western saddles, you will have a better chance at getting a higher sale price if you have a quality used Western saddle for sale.
Buying new or used there are a few things to have on your checklist when you go looking at Western saddles for sale.
Western saddles are made for specific disciplines. There are Reining saddles, Cutting saddles, Pleasure saddles just to name a few. Make sure you pick the one that best meets your riding style.
Keep in mind the size seat you require. Also, seats vary in padding and shape so it's best to try a few and see what really feels comfortable. Almost any saddle will feel good if you just sit on it in the store-you need to put it on your horse and ride in it for more than 10 minutes!
Next on your list should be what your horse needs in a saddle. What type of saddle tree is important. Most horses take full or semi quarter horse bars but different breeds have different requirements. Arabs, Quarter horses and even Draft horses all have specific fits that need to be accommodated.
The material that the tree is made of will effect the price so keep that in mind.
Once you have started to narrow down the choices of Western saddles for sale, you have also probably made your decision about new or used Western saddles for sale. No matter which way you go, here are a few things to consider:
And finally... when looking at used Western saddles for sale remember to take your time and try many! It can be a bit time consuming but the end result is worth it-- a happy horse and a happy ride!
