Welps on my horse

by Terry
(Aledo, Tx)

This afternoon and discovered my gelding covered with whelps all over him. More on the left side. They do not seem to bother him but I cannot understand what caused them. Can you help?

Possible Allergy
by: Saskia

Hi Terry,
That must have been an interesting surprise to find those on your horse! It's happened to me a few times over these many years and I'm guessing by welps you mean small bumps?? If that's the case they are usually nothing to worry about. They could just be an allergic reaction to something your horse has eaten. This time of year with new growth and fresh grass growing they can pick up a weird piece of something and it triggers the bumps. They will usually go away on their own (unless he keeps eating the same thing but usually the "thing" is an uncommon edible that is in a small area. In some cases vets will prescribe an antihistamine and/or an anti inflammatory to help your horse recover
To be sure your horse is having an allergic reaction and not something more serious contact your vet to have a look at him
