WOMEN and HORSES
"What is it about women and horses?" I get asked that question a lot!! It's usually being asked by someone's boyfriend or husband in a bewildered "I just don't get it" kind of tone, including eye rolling and other perplexed facial expressions. It would be easy to just romanticize the relationship and say it's simply the beauty of the horse that woos women. But there seems to be an almost deeper attraction, which draws women and horses together. Whether riding in competition or simply being a weekend rider, horseback riding is a sport that women can excel at. Maybe it’s because riding is not only about being physically able to ride but also about having a relationship and being able to communicate well. Women are really good at that!

Even though horses are big, strong and powerful they can also be intimidated and easily frightened. Most women are empathetic to the horse's vulnerability and they understand the trust that the horse has to place in the rider. Women have the patience to learn how and possess the sensitivity to make such a partnership work. For some women, their time with horses is a chance to step away from the problems and mundane tasks of day to day. By focusing solely on the horse, the rider gets a little break from routine and gains many rewards. Not only is there the physical activity with a willing partner, but also the great sense of accomplishment. Horses are direct and honest and completely non judgmental. For many women this is an ideal way of learning more about themselves. The sheer size of the horse forces you to become engaged and for lots of women this can help boost their self confidence and instill a sense of independence and control in all other areas of their lives. Likely, this is one of the big reasons why
using horses in a therapeutic setting is so powerful and why Equine Assisted Therapy for personal development programs
are gaining in popularity worldwide. The other great thing about women and horses is finding other women that share your passion. Spending an afternoon chatting with your barn buddies while cleaning tack is a great way to unwind with like-minded friends. A whole new set of friends develops with a shared passion. For a lot of women it's a creative outlet and a way in which they can express themselves. One thing is for sure, there's something about this non verbal relationship that women and horses have that gives women a real sense of well being... not only physically but also spiritually.
